Chadian political turmoil, social chaos, poverty, and desertification are what one often hears about in conversations and the international media. What else could this Sahelian vast territory could offer beyond its instability one would think. It is a fact that the current state of affairs in Chad leaves much to be desired. In the past decades, Chad made the headlines with very little positive to offer.
It is important to look for the positive that allows Chadians to call this land home and enjoy it at times amid the overall chaos. Here are a few traits that make this country unique in its goodness.
Taking a stroll down any street, one greets and is greeted. A simple hand gesture, a head nod, or a firm handshake is the Chadian way. Greeting one another is acknowledging the common humanity that unites Chadians.
A visit to a Chadian household starts with a series of greetings asking about health, family members, and life in general. This is followed by an offering of water to drink. Water is always a part of the welcome. Water, regardless of how much is offered, is the symbol of sharing, compassion, and hospitality. It is the least a Chadian can give to another as a token of respect.
A guest is royalty in the sense that their comfort and well-being are crucial. A Chadian wants his guest to feel as warm as the warm weather. Various cultures in the country have specific household rituals for guests; the special dish to serve food, the best piece of meat, and the special outfit. Chadians are welcoming and would want to offer the best they can and ensure that time spent in the household, or the country is filled with good memories.
When there is a death, wedding, or dowry in the community, Chadians come together to embrace and support the mourning or celebrating family. Community support is key in Chad, as people stand ready to assist. This comes in the form of financial or material means; however, just being present is highly appreciated.
The diversity of ethnic groups in Chad offers an equally varied gastronomy. Made with cereals, vegetables, meat, and fish, Chadian dishes are the face of each cultural group influenced by their natural environment. Grilled meat in the street of Ndjamena the capital city, sauces per region, and the national cereal-based starch dish that accompanies show the culinary richness. When in Chad, different pallets can surely find their preference.
The Republic of Chad has much good to offer and it is sadly overshadowed by the turmoil. That day when peace and stability arrive, Chadian goodness will equally shine; in the meantime, it is important to highlight the latter.
